What is comet moth?

The comet moth (Argema mittrei) is a large and beautiful species of silk moth that is native to Madagascar. It is named for its long, delicate tail-like extensions on its hindwings that resemble a comet's tail.

The wingspan of the comet moth can range from 15 to 20 centimeters, making it one of the largest moths in the world. The moth's wings are a striking, shimmery white color with pink and yellow markings.

Comet moths are primarily nocturnal and are known for their short lifespan, typically only living for about one week. During their short adult life, they do not eat as they do not have functioning mouthparts.

Male comet moths are attracted to females by their pheromones and will fly long distances to find a mate. The females lay their eggs on the undersides of leaves, where the caterpillars will hatch and feed on the leaves of their host plant.

As with many species of moths, the comet moth faces threats from habitat loss and degradation. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this stunning and unique species.
